Found Heaven at Habitas Bacalar

Picture this: jumping into fresh and clean, crystal clear, warm, bath-like water, surrounded by the jungle. Above you is a blue sky with fluffy white clouds, and you hear nothing but birds chirping in the distance. When I think of where I want to go to Heaven, it’s this place. I had been to Bacalar in March of 2021 for the first time, and I left wanting to come back again asap. Read more about my overview of Bacalar: Mexico’s Lagoon of Seven Colors, here.

When on the lagoon back in March, I saw a glimpse of the construction of the new Habitas property that would be opening soon. Habitas is a gem in Tulum, so when I learned that the group would be opening up a location in Bacalar, it immediately became a must-see on my to do list.

Habitas properties are always a little oasis, an opportunity to disconnect from the world outside of their walls and connect with nature and their community. A girlfriend and I just took a weekend trip down from Tulum and the new location was everything I expected and more. Upon arrival you complete a welcome ceremony and you set an intention for your time there. Once you’re settled into your individual A-frame room and you make your way to their outdoor lounge area on the lagoon, you are greeted by a masseuse for a complimentary 5-minute massage. It’s so good that you will likely decide to book a full massage appointment during your stay. I did, and it was so relaxing that I was a bit delirious and got super lost on my way back to my room. Their fresh cocktails and a jump in the lagoon brought me back to life shortly thereafter.

The main restaurant, Siete, is named after the “seven” shades of the blue lagoon. We had dinner there and the menu did not disappoint. They have fish, chicken, and pork, and a whole page for plant-based options, all locally sourced. I ordered the carrots as my main meal and wasn’t sure how carrots could taste so good. Their head chef also greets each table to check on you.

My only piece of advice to guests visiting is to be prepared for the mosquitos. Habitas will provide you with a small bottle of chemical-free repellant, so you should plan to carry this with you as soon as the sun starts to set. My friend and I were eaten alive and were covered in bites before the end of day one.

The staff is super friendly, attentive, and go out of their way to make your experience relaxing and perfect. Their head of client experience even helped me set up (and teach me how to work) my new drone.

When I’m on vacation I usually like to hop around and see as many places outside of my hotel as possible. I did that during my first trip to Bacalar (again, here). But this was honestly the first trip I took where I had no desire to leave the property. I highly recommend making the trip down to Bacalar and checking out Habitas. Rain or shine, it is Heaven and I’m sure you will agree.

xx Em
